All of the subsystems for IRIS InSight can be installed
using IRIX. You do not need to use the miniroot. Refer to
the _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_o_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e or the

_A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e for complete installation instructions.
2.4 _P_r_e_r_e_q_u_i_s_i_t_e_s
Your workstation must be running release 4D1-5.3 in order to
use release 2.3 of IRIS InSight.
If you want to install the IRIS InSight viewer
(_i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_w._c_l_i_e_n_t) then you must also install _x__e_o_e._s_w._e_o_e,
_m_o_t_i_f__e_o_e._s_w._e_o_e, _e_o_e_1._s_w._i_r_i_x__l_i_b,
_d_m_e_d_i_a__e_o_e._s_w._c_o_m_p_r_e_s_s_i_o_n, _d_m_e_d_i_a__e_o_e._s_w._c_o_m_m_o_n,
_d_m_e_d_i_a__e_o_e._s_w._a_u_d_i_o, _c_o_m_p_i_l_e_r__e_o_e._s_w._l_i_b, _c++__e_o_e._s_w._l_i_b,
and _V_i_e_w_K_i_t__e_o_e._s_w._b_a_s_e for the viewer to function properly.
If you want to view any of the inline Inventor media objects
then you must install _i_n_v_e_n_t_o_r__e_o_e._s_w._i_n_v_e_n_t_o_r. If you want
to view any of the inline movie objects then you must
install _e_o_e_1._s_w._g_f_x__l_i_b. If you want to install the online
help (_i_n_s_i_g_h_t._b_o_o_k_s._h_e_l_p) for the IRIS InSight viewer then
you must install _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_w._s_g_i_h_e_l_p along with the viewer.
If you wish to install the SGIHelp/XHELP Developer's kit
then you will need to install _i_n_s_t__d_e_v._s_w._b_a_s_e, and
_d_e_v._s_w._m_a_k_e which are part of IDO in order to build instable
images. If you simply want to build the samples without
building images then you don't need these subsystems.
2.5 _C_o_m_p_a_t_i_b_i_l_i_t_y
The IRIS InSight 2.X viewers are incompatible with the IRIS
InSight 1.0 books. You will not be able to install the
older 1.0 books after a 2.X viewer is installed, due to
incompatibility rules during installation. However, we have
no means of preventing users from mounting 1.0 books onto a
2.X viewer's filesystem.
- 4 -
It is also possible to mount and access the 5.3 books from a
5.2 system, however the help for applications may not work
due to changes in the applications and documentation between
the two operating systems. The same is also true for 5.2
help books being accessed from 5.3 applications.
2.6 _O_t_h_e_r__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n
You can install IRIS InSight in four configurations:
+o Local client and server
+o Client with remote server
+o Client with server on CD-ROM
+o Creating an InSight document server
+o Client accessing books from multiple locations
Important: Please read this section carefully. It details
installation information specific to the IRIS
InSight product.
2.6.1 _L_o_c_a_l__C_l_i_e_n_t__a_n_d__S_e_r_v_e_r The default installation
configuration is to install the IRIS InSight Viewer and
Document Library on a single system. The total size of the
viewer, glossary, and help is a little more than 11 Mb.
Installing additional books requires additional disk space.
If you have the disk space, this is the ideal configuration
since it gives the viewer fastest access to the book data.
See the Release Notes for products that contain books to
find out the disk space requirements for each book.
2.6.2 _C_l_i_e_n_t__w_i_t_h__R_e_m_o_t_e__S_e_r_v_e_r If several machines plan
on sharing all the books via NFS mounts then this is the
configuration of choice. To install the IRIS InSight Viewer
and Document Library on a remote server and access the
information from a local client system, follow these steps:
1. On the server:
a. Install the complete IRIS InSight product image
and all books.
IIIInnnnsssstttt>>>> iiiinnnnssssttttaaaallllllll iiiinnnnssssiiiigggghhhhtttt ****....bbbbooooooookkkkssss....****
b. Export the /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e directory using the System
Manager.
- 5 -
2. On the client:
a. Install the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_w._c_l_i_e_n_t subsystem (you
might want to install the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._m_a_n._m_a_n and
the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._m_a_n._r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s subsystems as well).

2.6.3 _C_l_i_e_n_t__w_i_t_h__S_e_r_v_e_r__o_n__C_D_-_R_O_M
Note: If you have a version of the IRIS InSight Document
Library installed on your disk but want to mount the
books from the CD-ROM, you must remove all the
current IRIS InSight books (with the IRIX command
_v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s _r_e_m_o_v_e) from your system and remove any
remaining files in /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y before
creating the symbolic link described in step 2.
If you wish to use the IRIS InSight Viewer and Document
Library from the CD-ROM and access the information from a
local or remote system, follow these steps:
1. On the system with the CD-ROM drive, insert the IRIS
InSight CD into the CD-ROM drive.
If the drive is not mounted, use the System Manager to
mount the drive. The most common mount point is
/_C_D_R_O_M.
If the drive is mounted correctly, you should be able
to change directories to /_C_D_R_O_M and see all the files
in the IRIS InSight CD:
ccccdddd ////CCCCDDDDRRRROOOOMMMM
llllssss
2. As root create a symbolic link from
/_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y/_S_G_I__b_o_o_k_s_h_e_l_v_e_s to the CD
mount point for the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t directory. You may need
to create the directory /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y if
it doesn't exist.

3. As root create a symbolic link from /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_h_e_l_p to
the CD mount point for the _h_e_l_p directory.

If you are sharing this CD-ROM mount point with other
users on your network, export the root (``/'')
directory and the /_C_D_R_O_M directory using the System
Manager.
4. On each client:
a. Install the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_w._c_l_i_e_n_t,
_i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_w._p_u_b_l_i_c, and _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_w._d_a_t_a
subsystems (you might want to install the
_i_n_s_i_g_h_t._m_a_n._m_a_n and the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._m_a_n._r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s
subsystems as well). You can get the
installation software from the CD in the
/_C_D_R_O_M/_d_i_s_t directory.

2.6.4 _C_r_e_a_t_i_n_g__a_n__I_n_S_i_g_h_t__D_o_c_u_m_e_n_t__S_e_r_v_e_r
For sites with numerous IRIS machines running multiple
versions of the operating system, it may be advantageous to
devote one machine to being an InSight Document Server.
This server would contain all the books for the various OS
releases, and the clients would simply NFS mount the
appropriate books and help from that server.
To create a document server, start by installing the version
of InSight and all the books for the oldest OS version that
any client machine will want to mount. For instance, if the
server will contain the 4.0.5, 5.2, and 5.3 books, then
install the 4.0.5 version of InSight and the 4.0.5 books
first.
For 4.0.5 the books are installed in /_u_s_r/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y.
After they are installed move the "library" directory to
"4.0.5library" so that the next install doesn't remove the
books. Later on after you have installed the other OS
bookshelves you may want to move the "4.0.5library"
directory to the location that the other library directories
will be under /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t.

mmmmvvvv lllliiiibbbbrrrraaaarrrryyyy 4444....0000....5555lllliiiibbbbrrrraaaarrrryyyy
Next install the 5.2 versions of InSight and the books.
Under 5.2 the books were installed in
/_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y. So after you have installed all
the 5.2 books you need to move the "library" directory to
"5.2library". For 5.2 we added application specific help so
you also need to preserve the helpmap files that are
specific to 5.2 applications so go to /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e and move
the "help" directory to "5.2help".

ccccdddd ////uuuussssrrrr////sssshhhhaaaarrrreeee
mmmmvvvv hhhheeeellllpppp 5555....2222hhhheeeellllpppp
Finally install the 5.3 versions of InSight and the books.
After you have installed all the 5.3 books you need to move
the "library" directory to "5.3library". You also need to
preserve the helpmap files that are specific to 5.3
applications so go to /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e and move the "help"
directory to "5.3help".

ccccdddd ////uuuussssrrrr////sssshhhhaaaarrrreeee
mmmmvvvv hhhheeeellllpppp 5555....3333hhhheeeellllpppp
Follow this process for any version of the books you want to
install on the server. If you ever need to install more
books on a specific OS bookshelf then create a symbolic link
from the proper "library" directory to the OS specific
library directory. For 5.X help books you will also need to
create a link for the "help" directory as well.
Here is what a Document Server would look like after
installing the 4.0.5, 5.2, and 5.3 books:

After the server is set up, all the various OS specific
clients need to do is install the proper InSight software on
their system and NFS mount the OS specific library and help
directory. Follow the instructions in the OS specific
release notes for how to install for a "Client with a Remote
Server" except mount the OS specific version of the
libraries rather than the "library" directory.
The following illustrates the specific mount commands a
client would use given the sample Document Server specified
above.
For an IRIX 5.3 client:

For an IRIX 4.0.5 client:

Under 4.0.5 "help" was not available; this was an additional
product that released after IRIX 4.0.5.
Note: Do not attempt to NFS mount 5.3 books and 5.3 help
onto a 5.2 OS system if you expect the help to
function for the 5.2 applications. The helpmaps are
tuned to the specific version of the application and
the book content and both have changed between 5.2
and 5.3. The same problem will occur if you attempt
to access 5.2 books and help from 5.3 applications.
2.6.5 _C_l_i_e_n_t__A_c_c_e_s_s_i_n_g__B_o_o_k_s__f_r_o_m__M_u_l_t_i_p_l_e__L_o_c_a_t_i_o_n_s
It is possible to access books from multiple locations in
IRIS InSight. This is useful, for example, if you want to
access the books available on the IRIX 5.3 CD-ROM along with
the books installed locally on your system disk. Due to the
complexity of this configuration, this kind of setup should
only be attempted by InSight administrators that understand
the intricacies of InSight book administration. We
recommend that you instead set up an InSight Document Server
as mentioned in the previous section.
To do so involves making the appropriate mounts and links in
the /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y directory so that InSight
will find the books. IRIS InSight assumes that every
subdirectory of /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y/_S_G_I__b_o_o_k_s_h_e_l_v_e_s
is a directory of bookshelves. For example, you may find a
directory called "SGI_EndUser" containing the end user
books.
Note: If you have any of the European language books
installed then "SGI_bookshelves" will be
"de_bookshelves" for the German version of the books
and "fr_bookshelves" for the French versions of the
books.
Each bookshelf directory contains a set of books, via
subdirectories and files. It is important to note that each
- 10 -
bookshelf is an integral unit and you cannot access
individual books on it via links. However, you can
configure the books available on a bookshelf by selecting or
deselecting the appropriate books through _i_n_s_t.
To add a new bookshelf to IRIS InSight, it is sufficient to
make a link or mount a bookshelf directory in
/_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y/_S_G_I__b_o_o_k_s_h_e_l_v_e_s.
For example, if you don't have the SGI_Admin bookshelf
installed on your hard disk and you want to access it
directly from the IRIX 5.3 CD-ROM, do the following:
ssssuuuu
llllnnnn ----ssss ////CCCCDDDDRRRROOOOMMMM////iiiinnnnssssiiiigggghhhhtttt////SSSSGGGGIIII____bbbbooooooookkkksssshhhheeeellllvvvveeeessss////SSSSGGGGIIII____AAAAddddmmmmiiiinnnn \\\\
////uuuussssrrrr////sssshhhhaaaarrrreeee////IIIInnnnssssiiiigggghhhhtttt////lllliiiibbbbrrrraaaarrrryyyy////SSSSGGGGIIII____bbbbooooooookkkksssshhhheeeellllvvvveeeessss////SSSSGGGGIIII____AAAAddddmmmmiiiinnnn
Note: These instructions assume the CD-ROM is mounted as
/_C_D_R_O_M.
The next time IRIS InSight is started it will now read the
SGI_Admin bookshelf from the CD-ROM along with any books
that were already on your hard disk.
In this manner, any number of bookshelves may be added or
removed from IRIS InSight.
2.7 _E_x_e_c_u_t_i_o_n__A_f_t_e_r__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n
After the software has been installed, you might want to
force your shell to re-cache its list of known executables:
rrrreeeehhhhaaaasssshhhh
You can then execute the IRIS InSight Viewer. It is known
as _i_n_s_i_g_h_t, or _i_i_v for short. _i_i_v stands for IRIS InSight
Viewer. The Viewer process places itself in the background
by default.
iiiiiiiivvvv
You should never have to explicitly execute the sgihelp
process. It will automatically start when a help request is
made from another application (via a ``Help'' menu item,
``Help'' pushbutton, or a direct message).
You should never have to explicitly execute the desktophelp
process from a shell. It can be started from the Toolchest
under ``Help - Desktop Help''. Once started, it will
communicate directly with the sgihelp process (Desktop Help
- 11 -
Server) and issues a request for the server to display the
Desktop Help Index.
After the desktophelp process issues the command, the
process quits.
Note that the sgihelp process should be present (installed)
on the user's machine for this to work. If it is not
installed, a warning will be issued to the user. However,
the sgihelp process does not need to be running for the
request to be made. It will be started automatically.
2.8 _M_a_i_n_t_e_n_a_n_c_e__A_f_t_e_r__R_e_m_o_v_i_n_g__B_o_o_k_s
Installation of books runs several commands during the
exitop phase to create a library level index for each
bookshelf. Unfortunately if you remove books using the
_v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s _r_e_m_o_v_e command the books are removed but the
library level index is not updated. To bring the library
level index back up to date invoke the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t_A_d_m_i_n command
on the specific bookshelf the book was removed from or all
the bookshelves. See the man page for _i_n_s_i_g_h_t_A_d_m_i_n for more
details.
